About Us
Northern Sun Farm Coop is a land based cooperative situated 15 miles south of Steinbach, Manitoba. We have 240 acres of land mostly uncultivated and forested. The coop members (families) have been living on and sharing this land base for more than 25 years. We have focused our attention and time on creating an environment where members and guests can work towards creating environmentally sustainable technologies and living practices.
Some areas of particular interest for us and our guests include alternative energy (wind and solar), organic food production (cultivation and storage), composting and vermi composting (the full cycle of food and waste), alternative building practices (recycling, straw bale construction, clay floor), small scale animal husbandry, well building, clean water conservation and wild harvesting/crafting.
We receive guests from all over the world. Some have extended stays, while other people or groups visit for tours or specific workshops. We have a long term well established relationship with our local community, Katimavik and WWOOF Canada.
One of the mandates of our cooperative has always been and continues to be to promote awareness, personal responsibility and enthusiasm for the natural environment through education.
We always welcome guests but ask that you phone ahead; otherwise we may be too busy to receive you.
If you are interested in arranging for an on farm tour, day, weekend or week long workshop(s) including all of, or some of our areas of focus, then please phone well in advance as the spring, summer and fall seasons book up fast.
The co-op has a large community center with a sleeping loft for warmer season use. It is available for groups requiring a meeting or gathering space. We also have lots of camping room.
We look forward to meeting you and to sharing our approaches to creating a fulfilling, healthy and life respecting time on this earth.
